1/10/21 - Family Letter to Sister Barlow

Hello Eve!!!!!

I've probably already told you, but I had my chick-Fa-La interview, and we decided to reinterview in March when the play is over. I'm in every single rehearsal, even though I"m ensemble. Quarter two ended ok, and I have no idea what school and life will hold for me now. But I'm cautiously optimistic! I love you so much Eve, and I pray for your success.

Love

Sweet Eve,

You are one of my favorite people!  I miss your fun personality.  Don't get me wrong, I'm happy you are serving a mission...but I still miss you! I was talking to Emma about the fun foods you can get at Costco and realized I don't buy some of those things now, because without you here, I'm the only one that eats them (frozen avocado bits for example).  Anyway, those foods will still be there later.

I was reading a bit about women's power to heal.  In "The First Fifty Years of Relief Society" published by the Church, Richards (Willard Richards I think?) observed that "women, though not ordained "to the various orders of the priesthood which were conferred upon us [men]" yet "share with us any and all of the ordinances of the holy anointing, endowments, sealings, sanctifications and blessings that we have been made partakers of."  Richards, an assistant church historian, read passages from Joseph Smith's addresses to the Relief Society regarding the privilege of women to heal the sick, and expressed his wish that "all the sisters were so faithful that they were healers of the sick, through the power of God".

You also have the gift to heal, especially hearts.  I hope you can see all the good you are doing for the people in your life.  If you are having a hard time seeing it, ask Heavenly Father and He will show you.

Not much going on here this week.  Grace Bird sang in Sacrament Meeting.  She did beautifully.  She has such an angelic voice. I've been helping Carden's orchestra (playing 2nd violin) and running copies.  They are filming the concert on Tuesday.  It's been ages since I've played with a group (instead of conducting).  I'm really enjoying it...except I realize how lacking my violin is.  My nice violin was the one that was cracked during Witching.  I've been using the violin that Grandpa Barlow's friend made.  It's great for fiddling, but not for concerts.  I try not to compare, but the students have nicer instruments than me.  Mine sounds dull.  Anyway, I'm starting to save up for a new one; a NICE one!

Have you been able to use your cello for missionary work yet?  Is anything happening with the cello choir? How is Jana?  I love to hear about the people you are meeting.

I am really proud of you!  Thank you for letting the Lord work with you and mould you into the person He needs you to be.  Be patient with yourself and others.  You will succeed!

I love you always!

Millie,

I'm glad you were able to get a blessing from one of the Senior Missionaries.  I don;t ever remember getting a blessing on the mission but it would have definitely helped.  Props to you for utilizing the resources available to you.

This week has been very uneventful.  After I did not pass the Estate planning course they were supposed to make up some extra credit for me but I have not heard back from them yet.  I delayed my large CFP test from March to July so they might be taking their time.  Having my evenings free has made me feel like I'm on a mini vacation.  Work is starting to pick up.  I'm beginning to figure out what I don't know.  I get a chance to present in a few meetings this week.  I am finding out there is a bit of an art at presenting.  My boss has asked that I read a book about "How to make your point and make it stick."  It has been very helpful and I'm starting to see how it applies out of work.  So far I'm getting out of this job what I was hoping for.  I'm learning a new skill set.  Hopefully it will all come together before I'm expected to swim on my own.

Hyrum got a cool experience today.  Shanel asked Hyrum to help with her Primary class.  She asked Hyrum to dress as Joseph Smith and go door to door to her Primary students and talk about the First Vision.  We got some pictures back and it looks like it was very successful.  The Primary class was the CTR 5s and included Lucy Wenerstrom.  We have been trying to get Hyrum to make sure his testimony is where it needs to be.  This seemed to help.

I get a chance to speak next with and have asked Patriarch Tippets to be my companion speaker.  I know we are not supposed to be fans of our spiritual heros but I am a fan of Patriarch Tippets.  I think the topic of "Living a Future without Fear" fits very well into what the Patriarch can cover.

It was fun/painful to review the "Most Eligible Bachelor in Provo" after we talked with you.  It was hard to watch.  How can someone be most eligible if they have never had a girlfriend and been home from the mission for only 6 months.  Sister White had a good showing.  She represented very well.  I would have wanted to get out of there as fast as possible too.  What a weird experience all the way around.

Keep up the good work kid.  You are making a difference.  Do your part and Lord will take care of the rest.

Love,

Dad
