2/14/21 - Family Letter

Hi EVE

Sami and I are having a sleepover until monday!

School is fun. I had a Galentine's day party! it was really fun! Cece and Hailey showed up. With a small amount of people  It was really fun! Next year I'm considering joining soar, I don't know yet though. I have been trying some new hair styles, and my hair has been knotting A LOT! Wish me luck with that. Ya that's mainly been my week! :)

Ow

Matilda is a train wreck, like you'd expect. I've been dancing for four hours everyday, so I'm really sore. I also have a few more physical parts, so I'm bruised as well. Everything hurts. We had BARF week (Be A Real Friend). You give people gifts, and someone else gives you gifts. It's like a week-long Valentine Secret Santa. It was fun. I'm really tired from this week, so i'm going to take some ibuprofen and go to bed.

Love ya,

Hyrum-(The little kid who is kinda featured but not.)

Sweet Eve,

Happy Valentine's Day! (Happy Love Day...I like that name better). Today was Ward Conference.  Bishop Chandler's talk was about missionary work.  He challenged us to create a family mission plan/statement. He also challenged us to find someone to share the gospel with in normal, natural ways.  He promised us that if we tried, we would be successful.  Challenge accepted. A teacher at Carden came to mind (Mrs. Gibbs).  She is Catholic.  We have been friends since the Snowbird activity.  She teaches in the room right next to mine. I will continue to be her friend and pray for an opportunity to speak up.

For Valentine's day, Dad fixed me the most delicious steak dinner.  He started the steak on the smoker and then grilled it high heat to get a nice bark and outside grill flavor.  It was incredible!  We also made heart sugar cookies and delivered them to people we felt inspired to visit.  It was nice!

We also did Chinese New Year on Saturday night.  Nate/Eliza and kids came, Matt and Emma also.  Good food.  We missed you and also Grandma and Grandpa Barlow.

We have been watching the temperature in SD.  Are you okay?  Grandma Charlene reminded me of something from your farewell talk.  You said that you knew that Heavenly Father would help you not feel the cold.  I hope that has been your experience.  Eliza sent us a screen shot from her relative who lives in Minnesota.  She said to Eliza "just think that your fridge is 50 degrees warmer than it is here!"  Well then!

We have school off tomorrow!  Dad has the day off too! If you want to call, we can talk whenever you are available, just let us know!

I'm so happy for the break!  I need time to catch up on my lesson plans, seating charts and grading.  I keep telling myself that I can do this, even if I only reach a few students.  Speaking of students, I got so many cute homemade valentines!  Some students had extra time in Art class and decided to make me a valentine!  I put them up on my bulletin board by my desk.  Lots of love!

Mari's "Galentine's" Day party was inspired by you and Emma. Mari spent so many hours decorating and preparing for that party.  I'll send pictures.  Turns out that Mari is REALLY good at decorating!  She did upstairs and downstairs.  By the way, if you can see the dinosaur balloon, take a look at how many arms and legs that dino has...I don't think the balloon designer double checked his/her work.  Kind of strange!

Hyrum has been working so hard for "Matilda" and his school work.  Mari has also been at "Newsies" rehearsals almost every day after school.  Dad seems to really enjoy his new job.  The new people he's working with seem to really appreciate him.  He smiles so much now!

I hope you are doing well.  We pray for you every day, multiple times.  I've been thinking a lot about your cute personality.  You are really special!  We miss you and the fun you bring.  SD is very lucky to have you right now!

Millie,

I got a kick out of your picture of your -20 degrees day.  We sent that around the family.  Eliza commented that her fridge is 50 degrees warmer than Aberdeen, SD.  You have a lot of warm prayers coming your way.

I had a really busy day at work, finally.  It felt good.  I presented in a team meeting and it turned out to be a more motivational speaker than I thought it would.  I joined a few appointments with planners and clients.  It felt good to talk to clients again.  I always liked that part of being an advisor.  I'm still trying to figure out the job and determine where I fit in.  I'm sure it will work out.

We have been more earnestly praying to know who we can serve in the Ward. I have been praying and waiting until some names come to mind.  The Lotts have come to mind a few times but I have not known what to do for them.  Since Garrison's surgery and paralysis they have had a lot of challenges.  Both Mom and I had Friday off and decided to try and take care of a few errands.  At the last second we decided to go to Deseret Book and when we came out we saw Gillian Lott trying to negotiate with one of her twins who locked himself in the van.  We put her purse and one of the twins in the front seat of the van.  She then turned around to get the other twin in the car seats when twin #1 started pushing buttons until he locked the door.  Gillian had just called someone to bring her a spare key.  We were there to provide a dry place for her to wait it out (it was raining slightly).  She left a twin in our car while she attempted to guide her other twin on where to push the right button to unlock the van.  The twin in the van eventually pulled the handle to open the van door which set the alarm off.  I thought he would start crying but instead he started dancing.  Gillian looked like she was about to cry.  We started laughing and tried to keep things light.  Eventually she got the spare key and opened the van.  When she opened the back door she lost some balloons she just purchased.  Mom went back into the Dollar Store and stood in line for about 30 min to purchase new balloons for her.  We went to Costco and bought them some food for dinner.  It is interesting how when we start asking for ways to help how we are directed to ways to help.  We were not planning on running that errand, Gillian was not parked in a logical spot for the store she was shopping at, and your Mom noticed how Gillian looked from behind as her back was turned to us.

We had our Chinese New Year yesterday.  We have Nate and Eliza over.  Sammie was also here.  It was good but not as good as years past.  We bought a few things from a box and tried to make it work.  It is so much better when we make it from scratch.  Mom and Dad did not come over.  They will be getting their first dose of the vaccine this week.  We offered up Penny Anne's yesterday morning and they felt that was worth the exposure.

I hope your transfer day goes well.  That was always a big deal for me.  I had one area where I was there for 11 months and had 8 different companions.  Everyone kept getting transferred but me.  It was a good thing I liked where I was.  Good luck this week.  Keep trying.  We are excited to hear how your music assignment progresses and what you can learn.

Love,

Dad
